An introduction to traditional dance and music for young people |

Jigs for Kids offers tuition in traditional English dances in the school setting. We are experienced in providing live music to interest children in their folk heritage and to enable them to have a positive experience in learning social dance. Traditional dance has long been recognised as an ideal vehicle for : Developing social
skills. And - provides the ideal opportunity for healthy exercise in a safe, structured and above all enjoyable format. Sessions are available at both primary and junior school level with groups of any size to a maximum of thirty. Duration of the sessions can be structured to meet the needs of individual schools and come complete with a teaching resource pack for staff and, if required, an activity book. One format we have found particularly successful is to offer the teaching session class by class throughout the course of one day, finishing (space permitting) with a final session where all pupils meet together at the end of the day for a grand finale in celebration of the day’s event. An alternative could be an early evening barn dance for children and families. Sessions can be geared towards special days / occasions eg. Burns Night, St Patrick’s Day, St. George’s Day, May Day, Midsummer, Harvest, Hop picking, Christmas etc. or may include discussion of the history of dancing and explanations and demonstrations of the instruments if required. Specialist workshops are also available in Morris Dancing and Maypole Dancing. We have found the sessions to be a very rewarding and positive experience for all children and this has been reflected in comments from teaching staff. Also available talks on the social history of the British Isles as portrayed through folk song, including agricultural, industrial, seafaring life etc. All persons
working with children under the "Jigs for Kids" scheme have
been vetted by the C.R.B. and hold valid certification issued by the Police,
